Overview of the project
Hawkers Hill plays an integral part in supporting the UK’s national grid with the ability to capture, store and export renewable energy.
The site consists of Tesla’s Megapack batteries, alongside Tesla’s Autobidder AI software allowing real time trading and control.
The park will have a net positive impact with the batteries able to accumulate surplus energy, storing it before releasing it during peak times. These flexible technology systems are able to provide more affordable and lower carbon energy solutions.
Overview of works:
Sinewave were engaged to carry out the 33kV contestable design for the new 20MW connection directly into the SSE primary substation.
Our in-house specialist engineering teams also installed and commissioned the 2x 33kV Panel switchgear in new substation, along with the installation of 300mm 33kV cables and associated fibre optics works.
Finally, the Sinewave team installed the Interface Panel for ANM (Active network management) system.
“The 20 MW/40 MWh site was challenging and rewarding in equal measure. The final commissioning and testing elements of the project was where it really came to life; intertrip schemes, interlocks, interface connections and protection testing between Primary, Feeder and Customer showed how complex these Battery Storage plants need to be to safely deliver the energy our network urgently requires.”
Key Challenges
Tight project deadlines with restricted outages on SSE Network
Development of the SSE interface panel was incorporated in this project (First on SSE’s network)
Close proximity to primary substation with tight boundaries and outgoing cables.
