SSE Melksham Ultra Rapid Charging Hub

Background:

Sinewave is a part of a framework agreement with SSE Energy Solutions for the delivery of EV charging infrastructure across the UK.

As part of Net Zero commitments, SSE plans to roll out 500 ultra rapid EV charging hubs nationwide by 2030, with one of the first situated at the SSE Melksham depot on Spa Road.

Powered by traceable and renewable energy, this hub will be available for both SSE employees and the general public to use, and has increased the ultra-rapid charging capability in Melksham tenfold.

Overview of works:

  • Turnkey project delivery for ICP & Private infrastructure

  • Installation of 11kV Package Substation

  • Full site responsibility as Principal Contractor

  • Installation of 5 Dual Head ultra-rapid 150kW chargers across 10 EV Charging bays

  • Full Civils package including, drainage, landscaping, block paving and a retaining wall

  • Street lighting

  • Bay Marking and branding

A challenging start but overall a well-executed construction phase by our supplier Sinewave. What we have created is a well located hub, just off of A350, that EV users across Wiltshire will appreciate. Constructed by a Wiltshire based company in Sinewave. Thank you for a job well done, let’s move onto the next one.
— Darren Weeks, Head of Construction, SSE Energy Solutions

Challenges:

  • Working on a SSE depot with high workforce footfall and prominent visibility

  • Tight timescales ensuring minimum disruption to the public and SSE staff

  • Close coupling the substation equipment on site due to delivery and weight restrictions
